What Is Diabetes: Diabetes Type 1

Type 1 Diabetes is a polygenic disease which means that many genes may contribute to its cause. The disease is usually diagnosed in childhood though sometimes not until after the age of 20. With Type 1 Diabetes the body produces little or no insulin and the exact cause of this disease is unknown. Only 5-10% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. Without insulin therapy Type 1 Diabetes is fatal however with insulin therapy even young children diagnosed with this disease can live long productive lives.
