Food Choices

There is much controversy regarding what diet to recommend to people with diabetes.

The diet most often recommended is, a typical healthy diet: one high in fiber, with a variety of fruit and vegetables, and low in both sugar and fat, especially saturated fat.

There is no such thing as a single diabetes diet.

Patients should meet with a professional dietitian to create an individualized meal plan that takes into consideration their own health needs.

A patient with type 2 diabetes who is overweight and insulin-resistant may need to have a different carbohydrate-protein balance than a thin patient with type 1 diabetes in danger of kidney disease.

Generally speaking, if you have diabetes you will be doing yourself, your family and friends an enormous favor by simply eating better…Period.

People with diabetes need to:

  • Limit their frequency of restaurant dining and fast foods,
  • cut the frequency and portion size of desserts,
  • Drink 8-11 cups of water daily
  • Avoid or limit all beverages with calories and make slow, gradual changes to their nutrition plan.

Vegetables

Patients need to eat a variety of vegetables and include all colors throughout the week. Your goal is to have your vegetables cover half of the entire plate for lunch and dinner.

Meats

You should try to choose lean cuts of meat and avoid heavily marbled meats like brisket and ribs. Remove skin from poultry and trim meats before and after cooking.

Grains

Aim to choose 100% whole grain breads, cereals, crackers, and snacks. Many grains are low in fat, but still are only recommended in proper portions.
