What is Diabetes: Overview

Diabetes mellitus, simply referred to as Diabetes, is a group of diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or because the body’s cells don’t respond to the insulin that is produced. Insulin is a hormone that is central to regulating energy and glucose metabolism in the body. There are 3 types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes which only occurs in pregnant women. It is estimated that 7.8% of the population has diabetes.
